Topic in Environmental Science: Climate Change
This article talks about how a study has found that Australia's ecosystem and the organisms in it will be impacted by future climate change. It is predicted that the environment where many plants and animals currently live will face many changes or will even no longer be there by 2070. Climate change is also said to make current issues such as habitat clearing, water extraction and invasive species worse in Australia. Dr Michael Dunlop who is a lead researcher in the study that made these predictions stated that these issues threaten the ecosystem and the organisms' ability to deal with the effects of the climate change. Meaning, if these issues become worse then the ecosystem and the organisms will suffer as well. Dr Dunlop suggests that something must be done now before the damage done to the environment reaches a point where we will not be able to fix or help it. According to the study it will also be important to conserve habitat on private land to help the organisms and ecosystems adapt.
I chose this article because I knew that climate change plays a big role in our environment and our world but I did not know it could have this much of an impact to the point where organisms and ecosystems are in danger. Even though this article is about Australia, the same thing could happen here in the U.S in the future. The most interesting thing part for me was the predictions that by 2070, the environment that many plants and animals rely on may possibly be gone. It is actually frightening to think of that happening because plants are a huge part of our world, we rely on them for many things such as medicine so it's important that we do our best to preserve them.
