This article is about how Dr. Shai Efrati from Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine has found a way to repair damage to the brain even years after the injury. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) consists of patients going into high pressure chambers that contain oxygen-rich air and that increases the oxygen levels in the body. The patients were monitored for two months while going under HBOT treatment and there was a significant increase in brain activity after that period of time. Patients also experienced increased sensation and some were able to start speaking again. To observe all aspects of the impacts of the treatment, CT scans were used along with SPECT scans. 74 people participated in the treatment and they were divided into two groups, the first received HBOT from the start while the second group received nothing for the first two months. The study focused on patients that were through 3 years post stroke but the treatment was shown to be effective for brain injuries that were up to 20 years old.
The title of this article was what caught my eye and after reading it I think this is an amazing achievement and it will be extremely helpful for those that have suffered from stroke or other traumatic incidents. It's amazing how far technology has gone to the point where we could treat something as serious as brain damage. I wonder if this treatment has any side effects or if it's effective for everyone that goes through it.
There are many other physical effects that come from having a stroke. A person may experience loss of vision or the ability to control their bladder/bowel movements. The person may also experience paralysis on various parts of their body such as their leg and arm muscles as well as throat muscles. These can affect simple movements and actions such as lifting parts of their feet and swallowing.
