Topic: Ozone Holes
This article was about how the hole in the ozone layer has been decreasing in size. The largest size of the hole on record was in September 6, 2000 when it was 11.5 million square miles wide and now in 2012 its average size has gone down to 6.9 million square miles. The main cause of the hole in the ozone is from the chlorine produced by chemicals that humans put out. According to studies, the atmospheric ozone is not declining because the amount of ozone depleting chemicals has stopped increasing but has been decreasing. The ozone layer acts as a protective shield for Earth against ultraviolet radiation which causes skin cancer. The decrease in the amount of chemicals put out is due to an agreement made that regulated the production of certain chemicals. This year was the first that the growth of the ozone hole was observed by a special ozone-monitoring instrument on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite.
I chose this article because I actually did not know that the ozone layer could decrease in size, I thought that the only way to help the situation was to prevent it from getting any bigger. It was a good thing to read that the hole had gone down by almost half in the past 12 years because that means that in the future, its possible that we could close the hole once again.
